Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin are South African photographers who live in London. They both started out by working for a photography magazine, where they would develop projects and share ideas. The main subjects that they include in their series photographs are groups of people e.g. Psychiatric patients. I feel like the idea of capturing patients is a tricky concept to consider but I think that Broomberg and Chanarin have captured this group of people well because they have let the patients capture their own photograph, which create a truthful atmosphere. Also I like the way that the background used creates mystery and creates an idea that they are being photographed in a hospital environment.
They have inspired me with their psychiatric hospital series of photographs called 'Ghetto. This is because of the way they have let the patients capture the photograph of themselves, which shows their true personality. By doing this it creates a realistic image of what the patients are really like and allows them to capture their photograph when they feel comfortable. I feel like this idea vividly links to my concept of capturing a amateur dramatics group because I will be showing how they truly are in a natural photograph of them and then comparing them acting out a character.
