Jackie Nickerson is a photographer that looks at identity when photographing a specific group of people. I am fascinated by her project 'Faith' because of the lighting she uses to capture a catholic group in Ireland. She captured beautiful portraits with studio light and documented the environment that the group are in, with natural light. To create the soft, subtle effect Jackie used a mix of studio and natural light. Even though she combined lighting it can't be identified as the soft atmosphere created stays the same throughout the project. I feel that the natural light used, vividly highlights the importance of the venue to the catholic religion. I feel that this project is documented in a objective way that can give the audience a realistic insight into the Catholic religion.
The 'Faith' project links strongly to mine because I am considering to experiment with similar lighting to create a soft feel to the B&B atmosphere. I want to combine both natural and studio lighting, however I feel that the natural lighting will work best to create a delicate feel to the B&B.
Jackie was interviewed and questioned about this project 'Faith'.
What were some common traits you found emerging from the portraits? "These are all portraits of individual people. I try to take pictures of people as they are. It’s important to try to see who’s in front of you and who they are right now. There was a huge diversity of people who sat for me so it would be difficult to say that I saw any common trait emerging."
